Madison was still a village of 7,000 people and 700 homes when gas was first introduced in 1855. The start of rail service in 1854 made coal available, which was used to manufacture the gas that spurred development of the first gas works. In January 1855, the Wisconsin Legislature authorized the incorporation of the Madison Gas Light and Coke Company. This original company operated until 1871, when it was succeeded by the Madison City Gas Light and Coke Company. In 1896, it was succeeded by Madison Gas and Electric Company. A new holding company, MGE Energy, Inc., was formed in 2002, and Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) became the principal subsidiary of this holding company.

MGE is a public utility that generates and distributes electricity to nearly 134,000 customers in Dane County. The company transports and distributes natural gas to more than 133,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties. The company has approximately 742 employees.
